The proposal would introduce a second vehicle access to the dwelling which will join the highway at the radii of a junction between two estate roads. This is undesirable in highway terms as it would lead to additional reversing and manoeuvring of vehicles at a junction, creating additional hazards for drivers and pedestrians, to the detriment of road safety. Due to the oblique alignment of the proposed vehicle crossing with that of Roman Way, drivers will also have impaired vision out of vehicles using the access. This would contribute to additional dangers for other road users since drivers will not have satisfactory observation of the highway in both directions. Policy TR/6 seeks to maintain the safe use of the road system, particularly within residential areas. Therefore, it is the opinion of the local planning authority that the proposal would be contrary to the provisions of this policy, contained within the adopted Borough of Charnwood Local Plan (January 2004).
