  • Proposalto be checked Good Afternoon, I have been advised to contact you regarding a request Leicestershire County Council would like to make. In December 2013, the Leader of Leicestershire County Council, Mr Nicholas Rushton, introduced a commemorative plaque awards scheme in Leicestershire to recognise and celebrate the county's rich cultural and historic heritage. The countywide Green Plaque Awards scheme invites local residents to nominate and vote for people and places that they think are worthy of commemoration. In the latest round of the scheme, the public voted for Thomas Cook to have a plaque installed in his honour. You may be aware Cook's idea to offer excursions came to him while "walking from Market Harborough to Leicester to attend a meeting of the Temperance Society". With the opening of the extended Midland Counties Railway, he arranged to take a group of temperance campaigners from Leicester Campbell Street railway station to a teetotal rally in Loughborough, eleven miles away. On 5 July 1841, Thomas Cook escorted around 500 people, who paid one shilling each for the return train journey, on his first excursion. This is sometimes reported as the world's first railway excursion Given his strong association with the Railway station in Loughborough, ideally, we would like to install the Plaque on a wall of the station within the property, preferably where the Plaque can be seen by passers-by. As shown on the attached plans The commemorative plaques are hand-forged, hand-painted and hand-finished by Leander Architectural who have been casting plaques since 1874. They are leaders in their field producing signage for English Heritage and the National Trust as well as Historic Scotland. The method of affixing the plaque is suitable for use on all types of buildings, including those with listed status. Thanks Callum Coebill, Property Technician
